Breast Uplift Surgery (Mastopexy)
Breast uplift surgery ‘lift’ is also known as Mastopexy. The breast surgery process involves a cosmetic surgeon taking away skin from areas around the breast to make breasts firmer and more pert. During this process, the nipple and the areola is repositioned in the centre of the breast following small incisions made by the surgeon. If there is not enough tissue to work with, a breast enlargement can be carried out at the same time to improve the overall appearance of the breast.
When you have breast surgery, you will be put under General Anaesthetic. It takes around 2 hours for the operation to be completed. When you wake up, you may find that the surgeon has used some drainage tubes which will need to be removed before you leave the hospital. Depending on the type of stitches your surgeon has used during the breast surgery, you may need to come back later to have them removed. This is usually about 7 days later, and occurs in our cosmetic clinic.
Typically you will stay in the cosmetic clinic for 1-2 nights following your surgery. It is recommended that you take up to 2 weeks off work to recover following the breast uplift surgery. You will be required to bring a sports bra to the clinic, as you will need to wear this after breast surgery has been completed. It is encouraged to continue wearing this day and night for up to two weeks post surgery.
Following breast surgery, you will have some scarring to the breast. Depending on the severity of the droop prior to the breast uplift, the scars will vary in size. Because of the nature of this breast surgery, it is normal to see some scaring around the nipple. The scars are pink at first but will gradually fade over time as they heal, and will eventually appear as faint white lines. Many women experience a slight loss of sensation in their nipples after having the breast surgery and some are also unable to breast feed. Your Surgeon will discuss all of the risks with you prior to the surgery and will answer any questions you may have.
